John Wilkes Esqr

Description:

This item is the bookplate of John Wilkes (1725-1797), a stamp or engraving, in this case, which would denote ownership of a book by an individual. His particular bookplate is an ornate bouquet surrounding a spotted background on which three Eagle heads are overlaid and separated by a chevron. Above the arrangement is a crossbow pointed up with a ribbon overtop it.. Below is another ribbon with the words “Arcui Meo Non Confido” meaning “I Trust Not in my Bow,” an expression that means not to trust in your weapon but instead your wits. The creator and year of creation are unknown.
