Description:
A caricature portrait engraving of John Wilkes (1725-1797) by unknown, created between 1792 and 1823, after an original engraving of John Wilkes by William Hogarth, before 1792. The image depicts Wilkes from the chest up, with an exaggerated profile of Wilkes with crossed eyes and an underbite. The image has minor shading in the background, with Wilkes printed beneath the image. He wears a powdered wig, a white undershirt, and an unbuttoned jacket. The stylization of his features possibly alludes to a caricature of his profile being disseminated.
This engraving of John Wilkes (1725-1797) was also printed post-mortem by an English engraver William Holl the Elder (1771-1838) for publishing in ‘The Biographical Magazine’ Volume I, a series of portrait engravings and accompanying biographical information for persons of interest. This volume was published by Harrison & Co, London.
