Description:
The following item depicts an etching of John Wilkes (1725-1797), by Caroline Watson, after an original drawing by Robert Edge Pine. In the image, Wilkes is depicted in a bust length oval portrait. He is seated three-quarters to left at a table, wearing a coat with braiding, frilled cravat and cuff, powdered hair brushed back, right hand holding quill poised over sheets of paper, looking up to left.
Caroline Watson (1760-1814) was a skilled Irish engraver who learned under her father and was the only woman engraver to work independently in the 18th Century. Her etching is based on a painting of the same drawn from nature by Robert Edge Pine (1730-1788). This etching was created for the cover of The Correspondence of the Late John Wilkes, with his Friends, a catalog record of the letters of John Wilkes (1725-1797) and his associates. The printing was done by Sir Richard Phillips, a printer and English bookseller.
This etching bears a strong resemblance to 6.13 Item 12,but with the exceptions that in this etching, Wilkes is holding a quill in his raised hand and that he is not wearing an overcoat.
The creators and dates for this item were ascertained by a comparison with a similar item digitized on the British Museum’s website. The difference between the two is that their manuscript has text printed beneath the image and ours possesses a signature.
