Title:

John Wilkes Esq

Description:

The following print depicts John Wilkes (1725-1797), created by William Hogarth, dated circa 1763-1800. The print is a satirical commentary on another print, and bears a strong resemblance. However, this version by Hogarth exaggerates Wilkes' features, including crossed eyes and an underbite. In the image, Wilkes is depicted in a full length figure, seated at a desk with a quill and a copy of the Magna Carta. He is wearing a three-piece ensemble with slicked back hair. These inclusions likely point to the man’s principles of liberty and freedom. The date and creator for this item were ascertained by a comparison with a similar item digitized on the British Museum’s website.
