Description:

The following item depicts an etching of John Wilkes, by an unknown creator after an original engraving by William Hogarth on May 16, 1763. This etching would have been created sometime following that date. In this engraving John Wilkes (1725-1797) is sat hunched over holding a pole topped with a cap inscribed with the word “Liberty”, to his left is a table on which there are two scrolls, one labeled “North Britton No 17.” and “North Britton No 45.” These scrolls refer to the 17th and 45th editions of Wilkes’ publication The North Briton. Respectively they are criticisms of Hogarth and King George the III (1738-1820). It is possible that this piece was also made by Hogarth but for publication as an accompanying image such as a book. Beneath the image is an attribution of the engraver, Dent, which was identified by comparison with some of his other work. The date of Dent’s etching has been estimated by his active dates, ca. 1800. This engraving is a smaller version of an original engraving by William Hogarth (1697-1764). It lacks the detail of the original but in form it is a copy.
