John Wilkes.
Description:
The following item depicts an engraving of John Wilkes, by Franz Heissig, circa 1770. The image depicts a portrait of Wilkes, whole-length seated directed to left, looking away to right, wearing fur-trimmed robe and a simple chain, gesturing outwards with right hand, left hand holding scroll labelled 'Magna Charta', leaning to right with left elbow on a table littered with papers and an inkstand.
The date for the item has been ascertained in comparison with a similar item digitized on the British Museum’s website. They have a different print of this engraving, but the curator’s comments state: “This appears to be a copy in the same direction of a mezzotint by John Dixon dated 1768. There is a reduced version in the same direction published by Carington Bowles in 1768 and a large mezzotint copy in reverse by Franz Heissig, dated 1770.”
