John Wilkes Esq.
Description:
The following image, dated circa the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, depicts a stipple engraving of John Wilkes by John Chapman. The image depicts Wilkes at bust-length in an oval frame. He is leaning forward slightly, with his head to the left. The caricaturize features are present in this depiction, with an exaggeration of his crossed eyes and underbite. He is wearing a white collar and under-vest. His jacket is a darker color with button detailing. He wears a powdered wig. Beneath the image, printed text depicts “John Wilkes Esqr [Esquire],” along with the engraver’s name, J. Chapman, John Chapman.
The artist of the engraving has been identified as John Chapman by similar stylizations to his other stipple engravings, such as those digitized on the National Portrait Gallery’s website.
The date for the engraving has been estimated by Chapman’s active dates.
