Title:

John Wilkes, Esqr. and John Glyn, Esqr.

Description:

The following item dated 1774, depicts an engraving with double bust portraits of John Wilkes and John Glyn on a plinth. Each of their images is captured in an oval frame with oak branches. Glyns sits on the right and Wilkes on the left, and there sits a sceptre and sword crossed between the two portraits, and hat of Liberty behind.The magna carta sits under Wilkes’ portrait and an illegible note sits under Glyn’s. An accompanying exhibit caption states:“This double portrait probably dates from 1774, when Wilkes and Glynn ran unopposed and Wilkes was at last seated in Parliament as a member from Middlesex. Note that it was possible to concurrently hold office as Lord Mayor of London and member of Parliament from another district.”
