Description:

The following item dated circa 1760-1830, depicts an engraving of John Wilkes by an unknown engraver, after an original drawing by William Hogarth in 1763. Wilkes is depicted in a whole length figure, seated to front and leaning slightly forward. His head is turned and looking to the left and his right hand on his knee. The other holding a paper lettered “Magna Charta.” William Hogarth created an engraving with similar body positions in 1763, which this creator copied for their engraving here later. This original piece can be seen on the British Museum website. The image is a caricature portrait of the man, exaggerating his features to emphasize a sneer, underbite, and crossed eye. An accompanying exhibition caption gives a brief comparative description of other items that give a softer look to Wilkes’ features, in contrast to this item.
