Description:
The following items dated October 1, 1805, depicts two stipple engravings of John Wilkes by James Hopwood after an original engraving done by William Hogarth. In the image, Wilkes is captured in a bust-length, oval portrait. He is directed and looking to the left side of the frame, and wears an open coat over waistcoat and neckerchief, and wig. The images appear to be a mild caricature, with an emphasis on the features of his face including crossed eyes and an underbite, but are softened compared with other items in the collection. The items were published by Vernor & Hood. There is another manuscript pasted to the engraving of one, an autograph of John Wilkes with the title Mayor under it.
An accompanying exhibition note gives some context to the image. It is mislabelled as being after a painting by John Zoffany’s oil painting, John Wilkes and his daughter Polly, found digitized on the National Portrait Gallery website. This is due to the position of his body and gaze, but it is actually a copy of Hogarth’s representation of Wilkes, such as this item. The item that actually after Zoffany’s painting is this engraving by Samuel Freeman, digitized on the British Museum Website.
The caption states: “This view of Wilkes by Hopwood is actually based on a 1779 John Zoffany oil painting of Wilkes. In the original painting, Wilkes is peering upw[a]rds at his daughter Polly with whom he spent his last years. The chin has been softened and the teeth are not as bad as in the Hogarth views.”
