Description:
The following item dated April 1, 1798, is an etching by Samuel Rawle, entitled “The COTTAGE of the late JOHN WILKES Esq. in the ISLE of WIGHT,” published by John Sewall posthumus. The image portrays a cottage in the middle distance, with three men standing in the foreground, and the sea in the right. It was published for the European Magazine.
There is an accompanying exhibit note that states: This engraving appeared the year after Wilkes’ death; it shows his “little villa” on the isle of wight, at sandown, where he summered with his daughter in his last years.”
