Title:

John Wilkes, Esqr.

Description:

The following item dated November 5, 1804, is a stipple engraving of John Wilkes, by Samuel Freeman after an original painting by Johan Joseph Zoffany, originally created in 1782. The image portrays Wilkes in a long bust length. His head is turned and he looks to the left, gaze tilted slightly upwards. He is wearing an open coat over his waistcoat. The image is framed in an oval. The original painting Freeman copied of Zoffany had Wilkes looking up at his daughter, Polly, which is why his position differs slightly from other bust portraits. This item does not use the caricature stylization that we see in other items. It was published by Longman & Co. An accompanying exhibition caption states: “This engraving by Freeman, printed in 1804, seven years after Wilkes’s death, is taken from a portrait painted by John Zoffany in 1779 of Wilkes and his daughter Polly, with whom he lived in his later years. Freeman’s is an unusually softened and flattering interpretation of Wilkes’ physiognomy.”
