Description:
This engraving of John Wilkes (1725-1797) depicts him looking off to the right. This interpretation of Wilkes shows him severely cross-eyed and with a similarly noticeable underbite. This engraving is a more complete version of an identical Engraving used in ‘The Biographical Magazine’ Volume I, which was an assembly of various notable individuals from various nations. That engraving was produced by William Holl the Elder (1771-1838). It is likely that this item was the original Holl produced and it was cut to size for publishing in the magazine. This particular item, however, was a later copy of that original engraving having been published by George Smeeton (1780- 1847) in 1812. Smeeton himself was an English printer and specialized in collecting Biographies. His works include The Eccentric Magazine (A magazine of the lives and portraits of strange individuals) , Biographia Curiosa (Memoirs of Remarkable individuals from the reign of King George the III (1738-1820)), and The Unique (Biographies and portraits of eminent individuals).
