Letter from John Wilkes
Description:
The following letter dated circa 1769, is written by John Wilkes to an unknown recipient. In the letter, Wilkes makes mention of the UK’s Parliamentary constituency of Middlesex was written during John Wilkes’s time as its representative in Parliament (1768- 1769; 1774-1790). This letter is the refutation of a request sent by an individual whom John wilkes refers to as Sir. This individual is evidently in opposition to the petition created by the people of Middlesex being presented to the King during a levee, a ceremony where the King would be caught up on the daily affairs of state. John Wilkes asserts that the petition must be presented on that day

Dear sir There is a talk of a dissolution tomorrow, as Members for the Courts we cannot deliver it at any other Levee day, (in case that should take place) therefore feel myself bound to deliver it today. I shall wait at St. James for you, & if you do not come, cannot deliver bear to delay it longer, but must deliver it myself I am your very humble ser[van]t G Myles(?) Berkeley Square Mr Moore

Friday noon. Dear Sir,
I neither approve nor can I consent, what the Middlesex Petition should be presented to the King this day, it having been Hated to many Freeholders, that it would not be presented to his Majesty[illegible] till the first Levee day in the next week. I am, with great truth, Dear Sir, your most humble Servant, John Wilkes
[In different handwriting] The above is the handmanship of the celebrated John Wilkes.
