Series XI: Publications, 1785-1982
Series XI: Publications, 1785-1982, is arranged chronologically and contains numerous publications on various subjects related to Wyoming Valley history such as the Pennamite-Yankee Wars, county and town histories, published speeches, and biographical histories of significant figures such as George Catlin, Silvanus Seely, and Jay Gould. Authors of interest include Gelett Burgess, Henry W. Shoemaker, Caleb Earl Wright, William S. Livengood, and Emma C. Embury. The majority of the publications are from the early 20th century and consist of booklets, pamphlets, published speeches, novels, and periodicals on the history of the Wyoming Valley region, although there are some publications that describe Central and Southern Pennsylvania history as well. In addition to many publications documenting George Catlin’s life, this collection also includes published speeches made by local historians at the Historical Societies of Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties, focusing on Native American tribes and the early colonists of the region such as Captain Lazarus Stewart, Thomas Hartley and Zebulon Butler. The French settlement of Azilum, that is located near Athens, Pa, is the subject of many booklets within the Tioga Point Museum bulletins. French Azilum was a settlement that was established in the late 18th century by French refugees. The founders were fleeing the French Revolution and wanted to live in Azilum with Queen Marie Antoinette.
