Series XIV: Art and Prints, 1700-1969
Series XIII: Art and Prints, 1700-1969 is arranged into six distinct subseries: Subseries I.I: Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania Prints, Subseries I.II: Artwork, General, Subseries I.III: Flora/Fauna Prints, Subseries I.IV: Portraits and Engravings of People/Historical Figures, Subseries II.I: Photographs, Subseries II.II: Photograph Reproductions for Valley Views of NePA, and Subseries I.V: Stationary. This series contains prints, aquatints, etchings, engravings, lithographs, mezzotints, photographs, illustrations, sketches, paintings, portraits, and stationary. Much of these works exemplify the various locations and landscapes of Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA), as well as historical figures and artwork produced during the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries.
Each subseries is arranged by medium, including various types of printworks to illustrations, thematic topics such as important locations and figures, and a wide range of artworks that connect and relate to the Northeast Pennsylvania region.
This series consists of a variety of artistic themes and subjects within such as landscapes of Northeastern Pennsylvania, local collections of work, and historical figures. Many of the prints within the Art & Prints series were originally a collection of prints left to [Haus J Hochler] by his father who was Curator of Prints Boston Museum of Art & given by Haus J. to Gilbert McClintock (Removed to Mapcase M-2-4).

Subseries I.I: Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania Prints, 1778-1887, is arranged in alphabetical order by location depicted in the art, and contains prints, aquatints, etchings, engravings, lithographs, and photogravures of valley views and landscapes of Northeastern Pennsylvania from 1778 to 1887. The materials featured in this subseries were initially in Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania: reproductions of early prints and paintings of the Wyoming and other valleys of the Susquehanna, Lehigh, Delaware, and Lackawanna Rivers together with a descriptive list of plates was compiled by Gilbert Stuart McClintock and published by the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society in 1948. Subseries I.II: Artwork, General, 1870-1923, is arranged alphabetically by the last name of creator and contains illustrations, etchings, engravings, lithographs, and prints of General Artwork including portraits, landscapes, and historic scenes. These pieces are not limited to Northeastern Pennsylvania themes and include a broader range of work. Some examples include advertisements, international locations like Venice and Concarneau, and historical events like The Battle of Wyoming. Specific artists that are included within this subseries are James Charles Armytage, Isidore-Laurent Deroy, Juliet Gambareau, Augustin-François Lemaître, Jacques-Gérard Milbert, James Queen, Jean-François Raffaëlli, Ferdinand Schmutzer, William Thomas Smedley, Pieter Daniel van der Burgh, William Walcot, and Henry Warren.

Subseries I.III: Flora/Fauna Prints, 1879-1922, is arranged by last name of the creator and contains etchings, engravings, lithographs, prints, and sketches of various types of flora and fauna subjects. Specific artists that are included within this subseries are Karl Bodmer, Frederich Stuart Church, Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl, E. Heinemann, Marguerite Kirmse, François Antoine Maxime Lalanne, Jacques-Gérard Milbert, Reichsdruckerei, Orwah Romen, and Louis Jules Frederic Villeneuve.

Subseries I.IV: Portraits and Engravings of People/Historical Figures, 1700-1956, is arranged in alphabetical order by artist’s last name or the last name of the historical figure depicted within the art and contains a variety of prints including steel, line, and wood engravings, portraits, prints, mezzotints, etchings, illustrations, lithographs, and paintings of people and figures across a wide variety of styles and subject matter. This series excludes artwork of John Wilkes.

Subseries II.I: Photographs, c.1829-1924, is arranged alphabetically by photographer’s last name or subject’s last name featured within the photograph and contains photographs of artwork either found in the Atherton home or relate to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Some works are photographs of replicated pieces dating back to the 14th and 16th centuries like Le Retable D’Isenheim (The Isenheim Altarpiece), by Matthias Grünewald and Discobolo di Mirone, by Myron. Specific photographers and artists that are included within this subseries are Jacob Cist, Charles F. Cook, Matthias Grünewald, and Myron.

McClintock’s Valley Views of Northeastern Pennsylvania: Reproductions of Early Prints and Paintings of the Wyoming and other Valleys along the Susquehanna, Lehigh, Delaware, and Lackawanna Rivers Together with a Descriptive List of Plates.
