Title:

The Right Hon’ble. John Wilkes Esq: Lord Mayor of the City of London

Description:

The following item dated November 9, 1774, depicts an engraving of John Wilkes, entitled “The Right Hon[ora]ble John Wilkes Esq[uire], Lord Mayor of the City of London,” by Robert Edge Pine. The work was published by S. Sledge. The picture captures Wilkes in a bust-length oval portrait. He is wearing a fur lined overcoat and ornate chain across his front body. He wears an embellished vest and jacket pair beneath with a white undershirt with a frilled collar. He is directed left and faces the same direction. His features are slightly less caricature than seen in other items, though there is still evidence of his cross eye and underbite portrayed in other likenesses.
