Description:

The following item depicts a letter dated September 12, 1794, written by John Adams, the 2nd president of the United States, to Mr. John Stockdale, an English book and print publisher of the eighteenth century. In the letter, Adams addresses Stockdale’s newest book, The History of Republicks, as well as references a book that Adams wrote during his time in America, “Discourses on Davila”. The John Quincy Papers, digitized on the Massachusetts Historical Society’s website, details John Adams mentions writing a book, the Discourses of Davila,

Quincy near Boston Sept[be]r. 12. 1794 Mr. Stockdale I embrace with pleasure the opportunity by my sons of presenting you many Thanks for your kind Letter and obliging Present of an elegant Lett. of your new Edition of The History of Republicks. (sic) [Republics] I know not whether Experience of the Evils physical moral and political of Simple governments, will recommend to the public my poor Speculations in favour of moral forms, so as to give you a Profit by the Sale of the Book: but I know the Devil ought to have Mankind if they dont Soon put a stop to the Progress of Cleons & Clodius’s Rienzis and Wat Tylers. I have written Since I came to America Discourses on Davila. You may make a fourth
