Description:
The item depicts an engraving by William A. Wilmer, [ca. 1820-1855], of James Madison, the 4th President of the United States, after an painting by Mr. Edwin, who worked from a portrait originally done by Gilbert Stuart. In the image, Madison is depicted in a bust-length portrait, wearing a dark overcoat and black neck-tie with a white undershirt. The backdrop has a fabric draped behind his figure.
The dates for the portrait have been estimated by the life dates of William Wilmer, while the date for Stuart’s original painting has been ascertained by a comparison with another item digitized on Meisterdruke’s website.
