Description:

The item depicts a print by an unknown creator at an unknown time, of Dolley Payne Madison. The print is taken after a painting by Jacob Cist in [ca. 1782-1825], after an original painting done by Gilbert Stuart in 1804. The image of her depicts her seated in a side profile, dressed in an elegant gown with a gold scarf at her lap and her hair drawn back. The date of the Jacob Cist painting was estimated by his life dates. The date for the Stuart painting was ascertained by a comparison with another painting digitized on Meisterdrucke’s website. On the back, there is an annotation in pencil by Gilbert Stuart McClintock. This identification has been made by a comparison with other annotations made by his hand on items in Series I: The McClintock Family Series, such as 1.57. Item 57a-b: Two Photographs of the McClintock Dining Room, Staged for the Centennial Celebration, 1926. (removed to Oversized Box #1).
