Description:

The following item depicts a letter, dated July 18, 1829, written by Martin van Buren, the 8th president of the United States, to G. Cronville. In the letter, Van Buren is writing to make his recent payments on an account with Cronville has been paid. He mentions that he does not have the means to pay some of his own permits coming up and requests Cronville aid him in paying these at the Merchants & Farmers Bank. He concludes by saying that Cronville’s aid would be a motivator for Van Buren in an upcoming hearing of a vote, where the favor is against them.

Transcription:

8th President U.S. My dear sir I take it for granted your account is right. I paid some of the permits such as I have not I wish you– would do it for me. This will be a warrant to motivate for allowing #92.48 agt [against] the vote in my favor agt.[against] you in the Merchants + farmers Bank Very Sincerely your Friend in haste M van Buren W [written]: July 18, 1829 G.
