Description:
The following item depicts an engraving of William Henry Harrison, the 9th president of the United States. It was created by Richard W. Dodson after an original painting by James Reid Lambdin in 1840. The item was printed for the National Portrait Gallery. This engraving was created from a painting that captured Harrison before his presidency, during his appointment as a major general. In the image, Harrison appears in a bust-length frame. He is wearing a thick overcoat with a black, textured collar. He has a white undershirt and black neck-tie. His hair is grey and slicked back. There is a tie or medallion on the right hand side breast of his jacket. At the bottom of the print, Harrison has affixed his signature.
The engraving does not have a date stated but has been estimated after the date of Lambdin’s painting and the life dates of Dodson. The date for the original Lambdin painting was estimated by a comparison with another painting digitized on the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History’s website.
