Description:

The following item depicts a fragment of a document created by John Tyler, the 10th president of the United States, and Dan Webster. The contract is torn, thus we cannot see the entirety of the document, and it appears to have been a blank copy as the annotations are not filled in the blank sections established for them. These passes were issued in the United States with the treaty with the Dey of Algiers, September 5, 1795, and continuing into the nineteenth century. A Mediterranean Pass was a document approved by the government to identify a ship that was to be protected under a treaty with the states of the Barbary Coast. These documents were upheld under a treaty with the Barbary pirates, allowing for passage and trade routes to remain undisturbed. From An Enquiry Into the Law Merchant of the United States, Or, Lex Mercatoria Americana, on Several Heads of Commercial Importance, we have matched the language we see within our manuscript to ascertain the context of the blank draft. There is also a similar contract in the Digest of International Law. The date for the item has been ascertained by connection with a letter by Tyler requesting his friend be appointed to a subordinate position in the Customs, 9.26a Item 26a.
