Description:
The following item depicts a letter dated May 15, 1862, written by Millard Fillmore, the 13th president of the United States to Sarah Hollenback Cist Woodbury. In the letter, Fillmore is sending his autograph and sentiments to Woodbury after a previous request by her. His tone is more personal and humorous with his recipient than other items we have seen in the collection. On the reverse of the manuscript, there is a penciled annotation by Gilbert Stuart McClintock, a Wilkes Barre lawyer and member of the Wilkes University Board of Trustees. In the annotation, McClintock writes that the recipient was his great aunt, the sister of his grandmother, Augusta Bordley Cist McClintock. His handwriting has been ascertained with other items in Series II: The McClintock Family Series, such as 1.57. Item 57a-b: Two Photographs of the McClintock Dining Room, Staged for the Centennial Celebration, 1926. (removed to Oversized Box #1).
There is an item in the collection, 9.32. Item 32: A Letter by J[oseph] Knox Walker to Miss [Sarah Hollenback] Cist, 1848 April 20, with Autograph of James K. Polk, [ca. 1848 April 20], in which Sarah is identified by her maiden name, Miss Cist. Her identity in that letter has been inferred by this item. In that item, she is collecting autographs of another president, James K. Polk.
