Description:

The following letter dated December 14, 1861, written by James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States to John C. Rives. In the letter, Buchanan is responding to a recent bill of $6.00 for a subscription to the Globe & Appendix for the Present Session of Congress. He is writing to state that he has been sent the wrong edition than what he requested. He states that he was looking for a copy of the Daily Globe so that he can reading from a particular session’s proceedings printed within. He concludes at the bottom of the page with a request to be told the price of the materials.

Transcription:

Lancaster 14 Dec[ember]: 1861 My dear sir/ I have this moment received your Bill for $6.00 ‘for the Globe & appendix for the present Session of Congress.” It is not this which I desire. I wish to have the Copy of the Daily Globe during the Session so that I may read the proceedings from day to day. I requested Mr. Rives to have the back numbers sent to me from the commencement of the session. You will oblige me much by attending to this matter for me. Your friend very respectfully James Buchanan John C. Rives} P.S. As soon as you let me know the price I shall promptly send it.
