Description:

The following item depicts a signature by Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th president of the United States. He signed his position of Lieutenant General, not president. The date for the item has been estimated by the promotion of Grant by Lincoln to Lieutenant General following his victory at Chattanooga. The item has the year 1862 written in pencil at the top right hand corner of the item, but it appears to have been smudged or erased.
