Description:

The following letter dated July 30, 1879, is written by Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th president of the United States, to Henry Martyn Hoyt, the 18th governor of Pennsylvania, American politician and Union general officer. In the letter, Hayes is writing his reaction to a recent news article related to local debts. He explains that Hoyt has said many of the same points and he would like to discuss the topics at more length in the future. On the back, there is an annotation in pencil by Gilbert Stuart McClintock stating that the daughter of Hoyt gave him this letter. This identification has been made by a comparison with other annotations made by his hand on items in Series I: The McClintock Family Series, such as 1.57. Item 57a-b: Two Photographs of the McClintock Dining Room, Staged for the Centennial Celebration, 1926. (removed to Oversized Box #1).
