Description:

This letter, dated July 21, 1862, is written by Chester A. Arthur, the 21st president of the United States, to Edwin D. Morgan. In the letter, Arthur is writing to update Morgan of the recent provisions and accounts of the soldiers under Colonel Ninton’s command. The account includes costs of uniforms, clothing, equipment, and food for two varying troops, one of 5,000 and one of 28,000 men accordingly. He sends the report and approval along with his letter and asks that the department work quickly to see the needs fulfilled.

State of New York, Quartermaster General’s Department, New York July 21st 1862 His Excellency Edwin D. Morgan Governor & Commander-in-chief Governor: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 19th inst[ant]. Colonel Vinton has honored and will honor all my requisitions for quartermaster’s stores. Immediately upon my return from Albany, I made requisition for all the supplies necessary for five thousand men & have been since receiving and issuing the same. He has clothing & uniforms sufficient and camp equipage with the exception of wall tents, for which he is making provision. I prepared and submitted to him, an estimate of the clothing, camp & garrison equipage & needed for 28.000 men,

Page 2: which he approves and has promised to provide without delay. I herewith enclose a copy of the same. I assure your Excellency, that nothing in my power will be omitted in procuring promptly everything necessary from this Department for the troops now being raised, and there has been no trouble this far, in filling every requisition which has been received.
