Description:
The following item depicts a typed letter from Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, to Cleveland H. Dodge. In the letter, Roosevelt expresses his regret that he will not be able to attend an upcoming dinner with the party entertaining President Wilson in New York. He concludes with wishes of success.
The “Wilson” Roosevelt mentions Woodrow Wilson, who would become the 28th president of the United States. However, in this letter, the presidential role he holds is for Princeton University, a position Dodge is said to have helped him secure.

My dear Mr. Dodge Cleve:
I thank you heartily for your letter and greatly wish I could attend that dinner. It would give me the utmost pleasure to do so; but it is simply impossible. I rely upon you to make President Wilson and all those who may be present feel how really sorry I am that I cannot be with them.
I hope the dinner may be a complete success.
