Description:
The following letter dated March 14, 1900, is written by Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president of the United States, to the reverend Francis Blanchard Hodge. In the letter, Wilson is reluctantly writing a letter of rejection to a recent invitation made to him by Hodge. He states that he has recently had to refuse a number of invitations, and feels compelled to reject this offer for that reason, even if his schedule were to be cleared. He continues on a second page to note that he is to be printed serially in a prominent magazine in the year coming.

Princeton, 14 March, 1900
Rev[erend]. Dr F. B. Hodge,
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
My dear Dr. Hodge,
There seems a sort of fatality which
prevents my going to Wilkes-Barre. I had
declined five Commencement invitations
before this of yours- so kind and so urgent-came;
and I would hardly dare
accept this one, because of the hot water
I should get into by accepting it now,
even if the original reason for declining
the others did not continue, and
continue imperatively, in force.
Back: I am to have an all-year serial in one of the leading Magazines next year; copy must begin to go in to them like clockwork on July 1st. Next; I am by no means ready; and I simply dare not make distracting engagements. That is the whole story. I must stay at home. I am deeply obliged to you both for the invitation and for the courtesy and kindness with which it is given; and I am genuinely sorry that I cannot accept. With warm regard, Respectfully and faithfully Yours Woodrow Wilson
