Description:

The following letter dated June 13, [1936], is written by Julian P. Boyd to Gilbert Stuart McClintock, a member of the Wilkes University Board of Trustees and Wilkes Barre lawyer. In the letter. Boyd congratulates McClintock on his recent 50th birthday and writes about sending over a letter between himself and Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States. He explains that this is the final signature McClintock has mentioned needing for his collection of the presidential figures of the United States. He continues on to explain that the letter included is one that initiated the Roosevelt library now at Hyde Park. In the small note, Boyd mentions that Roosevelt already had the idea set for the library but gathered others to make it appear as if it were a group effort. This letter has some part in explaining the provenance of the subseries, as we can see McClintock is especially securing varying materials pertaining to these figures. The letter in question can be seen in 9.97 Item 97. The date for this item, the year 1937, has been ascertained by the reference to McClintock’s recent 50th birthday, which being born in December of 1886, would put this letter of June in the year 1937.

The Papers of Thomas Jefferson Princeton University Library Princeton, New Jersey June 13th Dear Gilbert, Congratulations on your 50th! Here is the FDR to help complete your set. I’m sure some of your classmates can give you bundles of autographs by Ike- or by “Sherm”, who seems to be writing long letters this week. See you soon, & I wish it could be at BL. Deadline Monday! Julian. P.S. This is the letter that initiated the FDR library at Hyde Park. He already had his “general plan”-in detail-but he wanted it to look as if the group he assembled had advised & promoted it.
