Subseries I: Zebulon Butler Correspondence, 1759 - 1789
Subsubseries I: Zebulon Butler Correspondence, 1759 - 1789 is arranged chronologically and contains correspondence related to the professional and personal life of Zebulon Butler. The items within include letters, copies of original letters, receipts, petitions, excerpts, and a check. Some examples of the scenes and events depicted or referenced within this subsubseries include the Battle of Wyoming, the American Revolution, ongoing conflicts occurring between the inhabitants and neighboring indigenous communities, as well as the arrest of Zebulon Butler after returning to Wilkes Barre in 1863.
Throughout this subseries we are able to see interactions between Butler as well as various other prominent figures of the time. A large portion of these individuals are military figures who played a role in the Revolutionary War or politicians from the Pennsylvania or Connecticut area. Some examples of the individuals that can be found within this subseries include: Eleazar Fitch, Samuel Parsons, Andrew Backus, Eliphalet Dyer, Joseph Mitchell Varnum, Horatio Gates, Nathan Denison, Simon Spalding, John Durkee, Edward Hand, John Sullivan, Benjamin Harvey, John Paul Schott, George Washington, William McClay, Thomas Mifflin, Ephraim Blain, Anthony Selin, William Stewart, Jacob Stroud, David Rittenhouse, Matthias Hollenback, John Crittenden, Elisha Lawrence, Samuel Hunter, and John Henry Antes.
