Description:
A letter, dated December 22, 1837, written by David Petrikin, a Pennsylvania Representative, to Chester Butler, a United States congressman and representative of Pennsylvania. The letter is addressed to Butler as president of the Wyoming Commissioners, along with additional sitting members, including, Charles Miner, Benjamin A. Bidlack, Charles Denison Shoemaker, William Sterling Ross, and Lazarus Denison. In the Letter, Petrikin mentions that he has previously received a petition of memorial by the commissioners on the 15th, and intends to aid in having it enacted as promptly as allowable.
Though there is an actual monument for the Wyoming settlers who fought in the Battle of Wyoming, the term memorial is likely referring to a petition by settlers classed as “wyoming sufferers,” as they request aid from the government. This language and its usage can be seen in 10.54. Item 31: A Petition by Stoddard Judd for Catherine Ropell to Chester Butler and Committee Members, 1828 January 20, where Judd mentions that the case of Mrs. Catherine Ropell is being presented as a memorial.
