“A Account of Sundries Purchas’[e]d for the use of the United States by Lord Butler Asst [assistant] Q M. [Quarter Master] in the Month of September 1779”

Description:

The following item depicts an accounting ledger, dated September 6-21, 1779, recorded by Lord Butler, the eldest son of Zebulon Butler. In the accounts, Butler records certain purchases by the regiment, including the use of Laurana Reyme’s horses in delivering express post, an express sent by Abram Pike to Tioga, and four days of work by Bartholomew Lonstretch. The total of the account comes to 34 pounds, 17 shillings, and 6 pence. Butler is recording the accounts from his position as assistant Quartermaster. The money system uses a shorthand form for the word pence, shown as a lowercase d. The page contains a number of mathematical equations that do not appear to relate to the accounts listed on the item.
