Description:

The following item number contains two notes written by John Butler, a loyalist commander and a British Indian Department officer, to unknown parties. In the first note, Butler describes an ongoing case of Richard Howell v William Bradley. In the note, Butler discusses the assignment of bail for Richard Howell, a citizen of Tryon County New York in 1773. The letter mysteriously mentions the legal term for someone whose true name is being withheld,“Richard Roe.” Although details are unknown, this name is likely being used in reference to the legal case surrounding Richard Howell’s bail being posted. In the second note, Butler is requesting the purchase of a cotton hat to be added to an account with “madam.” Butler asks that the receiver give the bearer of the note the hat to bring back with them. There is no price mentioned for the account. The back mentions that the note is being attributed to the “barbarous colonel butler.”
