Title:

Extract of a Letter

Description:

The item depicts a printed extract of a letter by Timothy Pitkin addressed to Colonel Wadsworth, dated February 17, 1801. In the letter, Pitkin informs Wadsworth that the land rights from companies, likely Susquehanna and Delaware Land Companies, have been rejected. The Compnies were sent over during the land conflict between Connecticut and Pennsylvania to settle the lands under the character of King Charles II. They would offer titles, rights, and surveys of these lands to the settlers sent over, even continuing to do so after the Decree of Trenton found favor in Pennsylvania’s jurisdiction of the land. This item notes that the reimbursement of lost titles and lands does not pertain to any under these said companies for they were not able to stand up themselve in court. As the companies were considered to be established by the heads of powers within them, seeking to establish their own governing bodies, they are not considered true institutions by the courts in the transition and compromise acts occurring at the time. There is an annotation at the top third of the page, which states that the letter is authored by Timothy Piktin junior to Colonel Wadsworth, with a notation that the letter is held by Timothy Pickering.
