Description:

This item, dated March 6, 1813, depicts a tax receipt by Bartholomew LaPorte for road taxes paid by Ebenezer Horton for Matthias Hollenback. The receipt shows that Ebenezer Horton received ten dollars and sixty eight cents from Mathias Hollenback. This receipt says that Hollenback paid this amount in both 1807 and 1812, but the receipt itself is dated 1813. There is a signature on the bottom of the front from Bartholomew Laporte, a merchant and manager of business affairs within the Asylum colony, and a land steward for Omar Talon. Mathias Hollenback, 1752-1829, was a businessman from the Wyoming Valley who was a merchant and President of the Wilkes-Barre Bridge Company. In addition to serving this company role, Hollenback was considered a Revolutionary war hero for his role in the Battle of Wyoming, a battle on July 3rd 1778, between the Iroquis and loyalists against Americans. Matthias Hollenback was also a merchant and owner of many distilleries throughout Northeast Pennsylvania.
