Description:
The following item, dated December of 1957, depicts a brief report printed by the Pennsylvania Economy League, titled a “Report on 1958 Budget of Wilkes Barre City”. This report offers an independent organization’s lens to review the spending of local Pennsylvania governments. It is presented with the intention that this information will aid them in improving their spending and make more effective plans for use. They give breakdown information on the budget as they found evidence of the spending, such as the assessed valuation on page 2, which states that the total assessed valuation for the City in 1957 was $82,913,754. The report goes on to mention that nearly $5,044,770 was spent on personal valuation for the occupation tax. The proposal by this group states that the city’s budget should have been $2,272,341, which would have increased it from 1957 by $23,723.
