Title:
The Luzerne County Planning Commission
Description:
The following item, January 1958, depicts a report of the proposed budget for Leigh township in Lackawanna county. A written justification for a city planning commission. The report was written by the Pennsylvania Economy League. This is an independent organization that reviews the spending of local Pennsylvania governments, so they can improve. This report has a notice on the front declaring that it can not be published prior to Wednesday, January 29, 1958. This report is about how Luzerne County would benefit from the formation of a Planning Commission. At the time of writing there was a debate on if the county needed one or if the politicians handled all of the planning they needed. The author references the well known urban planner Walter Blucher. Blucher was an influential figure in early 20th century city planning. This report calls him a “leader of the planning field”. The author quotes him in this report to advocate for a Planning Commission to be established. They say it will be helpful in future construction in the area such as highways.
