Description:

This letter is authored by French writer, politician, diplomat and historian, Francois-Rene de Chateaubriand on August 3rd of an unknown year. In the letter, Chataubriand is speaking about the upcoming general assembly of the Order of Saint Louis, a dynastic order of chivalry founded 5 April 1693 by King Louis XIV. The Order held an annual event where they gathered for the celebrations of the feast day of Saint Louis. The event was held on the 25th of August, however, in the letter Chateaubriand notifies the recipient that the date does not work for his schedule. He asks if they could not reschedule the event for another time. Other handwriting samples with French and English translation available at Le Manuscrit Francais’ website.

Translation Attempt:

I had forgotten, my dear sir, that I am not free on Saturday! How are you? Would it be possible to have the party on Sunday or Monday? Especially since many staff — shut up the St Louis family run all day. We — and follow, but, I still write to you in advance to arrange — — the best possible.

We have read everything to us. Chateaubriand Thursday, August 23
