Description:

The letter is authored on April 10, 1860 by English writer and social critic, Charles Dickens, to Irish history painter, literary and portrait painter, and illustrator, Daniel Maclise. In the letter, Dickens excuses his absence, having been away in the countryside. He goes on to ask for time on a possible project, and conducts business with Maclise. The end of the letter appears to be Maclise asking Dickens’ opinion or comment on an autobiography, which he refutes without seeing further work.

Transcription:

Tuesday, Tenth April 1860 Dear sir I have been unfortunately in the country, and am back now only in town for a day. This will explain to you, I hope, with the delay and the rsvp of this answer to one letter. I beg to retain “Robert Blake” for sometime. The mss[manuscripts] that I return, are scarcely to the purpose of these papers. Enclosed is a cheque for £10 on your general account with the publication. I cannot answer the autobiographical question, without seeing something of the work itself. In great haste Dear Sir Faithfully yours, Charles Dickens Daniel Maclise Esquire
