Title:

For the Trial of Warren Hastings, Esq.

Description:

The item is a ticket to the fourteenth day of British colonial administrator, Warren Hastings’ trial of impeachment. The specific date is not included, but the first day of the trial was held on February 13, 1788, and the official verdict was delivered on April 23, 1795, so the year is roughly between these dates. Hastings was accused of misconduct during his time in Calcutta, particularly mismanagement and personal corruption, and his case was prosecuted by Anglo-Irish statesman, economist, and philosopher, Edmund Burke. The Impeachment led to a split view and progressive conversations concerning the framing of the British Empire moving forward. One view held with Hastings, where the British Empire would continue to maintain absolute power in the pursuit of the colonizer’s interest. The alternative side, posited by Edmund Burke, laid the groundwork for the empire’s cognizance of the natural sovereignty as recognized by the rights of the colonized. The item depicts a coat of arms with 3 shields, a crest with three battering rams, a crown over the crest and a second crest depicting an open palm. On top of the full coat of arms is an arm with an olive branch.
