In the letter, Hudson discusses his friend’s interest in William H. Hudson’s title, Fan: The Story of a Young Girl's Life, and later, his critique of other published titles of the time. It also mentions how the book in question did not hold his name until the second edition. He also addressed mild commentary on Libraries of the time, and their interest in including his work. In the letter, Hudson mentions another author of the time, English nature writer, Richard Jefferies.

Dear Mr. Milsted,
Your letter finds me in a nursing home here- I had been down staying at Lelant some time until I got very bad & was then made to put myself in bed for a time.
There is a book called Fan: A story of a young girl's life but I don’t think it is any use troubling about it. You could get a copy, but if you want very much to read it, I will lend you mine when I get back to London. It was published without my name, by Chapman and Hall & mine went with a second edition. He issued it on the share profits system & sent me £37 as my share. If(?) unfit(?) on [f]or(?) a 7d or 1/(?) thing(?) in one of the libraries or rather rubbish novels while(?) are being poured out of such a rate now & where it would so(?) fit(?) mexico with my better words, but it would’nt do for a series like in readers library. There you would’nt want(?) a novel by Jefferies for example except of course the one you secured & the Dewey [sic] Morn.
Yours sincerely W H Hudson
