Description:
The letter is authored on April 10, 1891, by French author, poet, and statesman, Alphonse de Lamartine, to an unknown recipient named “Monsieur”. In the letter, Lamartine is sending his thank you, for a contributor’s voting interest, along with a voucher of his gratitude. He then proceeds to discuss financial business with the letter’s recipient. He speaks to borrowing money for the time with the intention of paying them back after he receives money for a journal of his. After retiring from politics, Lamartine had sustained himself on writings across various subjects, such as literary criticism and history. Under a great deal of stress from his creditors, Lamartine spent the remainder of his life publishing monthly installments of the Cours familier de littérature as a sole means of financial stability. The year, 1851, has been deduced through a handwriting comparison of Laramtine’s other letters. The date 1851 would make sense with the content of his letter, as he lost the Presidential election in 1848 to Louis Napoléon Bonaparte. His address of his contributor's support during that race may be what the voucher spoken of in his letter concerns. He also concludes his letter with his gratitude for the recipient’s voting interest.
