Description:

The letter is authored on June 7, 184[1], by British historian and Whig politician, Thomas Babington Macauley, to English diplomat and statesman from the Villiers family, George Villers, Lord Clarendon at the time of the letter's date. The letter informs of Dr. Thomas Arnold’s interest and research into Julius Caesar and his campaign against Pompey. The region of interest named in the letter, Leirda, goes by another name more prominently. It is called Lleida in Catalan, with Leirda being its Spanish name. A collection of additional works by both Thomas Babbington and Dr. Thomas Arnold can be found here, including those on the study of Rome, as mentioned in the letter. The letter’s date is illegible, but must fall between these years of 1839-1841, as they are the term held as Secretary of War where the letter is addressed from at the top.

Location:

Lleida (Lerida)

Transcription:

War office June 7. 18[39-41](?) Dear L[or]d Clarendon, Dr. Arnold has set his heart on visiting Spain across the Pyrenees. His chief object I believe is to obtain geographical information for his History of Rome. With that wishes to examine the scene of Julius Caesar’s great campaign against Pompey’s lieutenants, the country near Lerida de(?)- We want very much to know whether the journey is a safe one. My own impression from some things which I have heard you mention is that it is very much otherwise, and that at all events, the Doctor will do well to leave Mrs(?) Arnold behind. If you could furnish any assertion it would be most thankfully received. Ever yours [Thomas] Macauley
