Description:
This letter is authored on October 25th of an unknown year by British novelist and dramatist, Charles Reade, to an unknown “Mr. Sterling”. The letter discusses a stage adaptation of Charles Reade’s play. The play, Masks and Faces, may be the subject of the letter, as it was later presented at [Theatre Royal] Haymarket on November 20, 1852.

Dear Mr. Sterling,
I have studied Acting too closely in France and England not to feel honored(?) by your inclination to open at the Haymarket in a Piece of my handling; and under this circumstance I shall feel a pleasure in placing ‘Ladies Battle’ at Mr. Webster’s disposal for twelve Nights of performance that will in all probability serve his turn and yours.
and should he wish to play it after that it can only be because it is worth his while to treat with me about the possession of the Piece:
you know how much literary occupation I have but now you are about to play to an audience capable of appreciating in some degree your truth, grace, glee, and pathos, I will interrupt anything when I can see my way to write or adapt a downright good thing for you:
