This letter is authored on February 26, 1844, by French historian, orator, and statesman, Francois Guizot, to an unidentified “Colonel Frapalli.” The letter describes a trip to London from Calais. This is likely where the book from Item 1a was acquired.

{letter} ------------ Je viens d’arriver à Calais. J’en repartirai cette nuit, eutre 3 et 4 heure du matin, pour entrer dans le port de Douvrer avec la marée. Je m’arrêterai peu d’instans a Douvrer et je partirai pour Londres où je desire aller diner demain. Je regrette que M[onsieur] de Chabor ait été retenu par une ensore/emsome(?). Mais je serais charmé, monsieur, de vous trouver à Douvre à la place. Recevez(?), je vous prie, l’assurance de ma coordination(?) distinguée Guizot Calais-Mercredi 26 Févier 8 h et demie P.S. Je descendrai à Douvre au Ship Imm.(?)

Translation Attempt:

I have just arrived in Calais. I will leave there tonight, between 3 and 4 am, to enter the port of Douvrer with the tide. I will stop a few moments at Dover and I will leave for London, where I wish to go to dine tomorrow. I am regret that Mr Chabor was retained by a —(?). But, I would be charmed to find you in Dover instead. Recieve, I pray you, the assurance of my distinguished coordination(?). Guizot Calais- Wednesday 26 February —-(?) PS I will go down to Dover in Ship Imm(?)
