Description:

The letter is authored on the 5th of an unknown month or year by English writer, philosopher, art critic and polymath of the Victorian era, John Ruskin to an unidentified recipient, “Rupert Jones”. The letter appears to be Ruskin reaching out to hear about the illustration style for the piece he is writing, before sending it to them. Other handwritten materials by Ruskin can be found at the University of Manchester's Digital Archives.

Transcription:

5th My dear sir You shall have a short paper by the 14th. but how do you illustrate. I have sent for but not yet received the way again(?) and I shall see your catch(?)- but how long do you want to do them. Supposing they are only a few lines like this [drawing] which one can generally do what we needs with? Here are some red seals for your letter boy(?) Ever truly yours Ruskin I can’t get a nice one today. The weather is cold and makes edges ragged —not the motto is supposed to be put on three sides — not three times said it is only “To day” To/ Proprietor Rupert Jones
