Title:

A bookplate featuring two babies with wings exploring books. On the left hand side in very small print are the initials “W.H.” and “W.B.” possibly referring to the artists who created the bookplace design. Also within the bookplate is a small print at the bottom center with the date as 1893.

Charles Dexter Allen was a bookplate collector born in 1865 and lived in Windsor Locks, Connecticut until he died in 1926. He was a member of the Grolier Club from 1894 to 1907 and an active member of the Stowaways Club. He was an editor of the Hartford Post from 1895 to 1897 and Editor of the In Lantern Land in 1898. He’s also been listed as a notable writer and editor for Marquis Who’s Who. He was a writer and artist and was interested in artists' prints, books, and drawings. He’s written many books including “The Bookplates of William Fowler Hopson.”

Edmund Henry Garrett was born in Albany, NY, in 1853 and was an American illustrator, bookplate maker, author and painter renowned for his paintings on King Arthur. He was a member of the Boston Art Club and the Copley Society of Art. He studied at the Academie Julian in Paris under Gustave Boulanger, Jules Lefevbre, John Paul Laurens, and Hector Leroux. His first wood engraving was created in 1879 under the tutelage of Robert Swain Gifford. His first original prints specialized in landscapes and architectural views and focused on different locations in Boston. His works are featured in a number of museum and library institutions across the U.S. such as the Boston Public Library, New York Public Library, Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Massachusetts State House. He died in 1929.
