Title:
Charles Dexter Allen His Book
Description:
A bookplate depicting a man reading a book by candlelight. There are vines in between the text and around the image. There are lanterns on the top and bottom. The man is most likely Charles Dexter Allen, the bookplate collector. Charles Dexter Allen was a bookplate collector born in 1865 and lived in Windsor Locks Connecticut until he died in 1926. He was a member of the Grolier Club from 1894 to 1907 and an active member of the Stowaways Club. He was an editor of the Hartford Post from 1895 to 1897 and Editor of the In Lantern Land in 1898. He’s also been listed as a notable writer and editor for Marquis Who’s Who. He was a writer and artist and was interested in artists' prints, books, and drawings. He’s written many books including “The Bookplates of William Fowler Hopson.”
The creator of the bookplate, William Fowler Hopson (1849-1935), was a painter, engraver, etcher, and illustrator, but he was best known for his bookplates.
